Summer Shout Outs - 28 August: Phoenix Johnson

Today’s shout out is for the wonderful writer Phoenix Johnson. I’m a big admirer of her writing and am sure many others are too. Hey Phoenix, tell us about the writer in you and your work.

Thanks Naomi.

First of all, some information about Phoenix, the writer.

Phoenix Johnson is an Australian author who has always had the passion for the written word. She had her nose in at least one book ever since she could read and would even scrutinize the back of the cereal box every morning at breakfast. It was only natural she take up writing.

Phoenix has multiple works in progress, and her favourite writing genres are the same as her reading genres; erotica, romance, paranormal, thriller and a combination of these. The Wolf in the Neighborhood, book one in her debut trilogy Wolf Smitten, was released January 15 2013.

She currently lives in a small rural town west of Ipswich, Queensland, with her partner, their daughter and a Siamese Fighting Fish, Cranky.

Now some info about The Wolf in the Neighborhood.

They hit it off quickly but when Krissy’s abusive ex, James comes back in to her life, Derek shows a side Krissy never could have guessed. However, James refuses to give up. Any chance of an excerpt? Pretty please.

The Wolf in the Neighborhood Excerpt

Krissy jotted down a quick note in case Derek woke up, grabbed her bag from where it had been thrown before, and had almost walked out the door when she remembered her torn clothes. It was tempting to have a shower to wash away where James had touched her but she settled for grabbing some clean clothes from a basket by the couch, waiting to be folded, before checking her cheek in the mirror. There was no bruising yet, but she knew there would be a dark smudge there tomorrow.
Heaving a sigh, she walked out the door before she let it get to her. There would be time to think on those events later. For now she had pizza toppings and a bottle of wine to get. Locking the door behind her, she headed downstairs.
Upon reaching the lobby, she was reminded that she should tell Mike about James so she walked towards the large man, who straightened up as she approached and gave her a schoolboy smile.
Not on your life, Mike; you’re way too for bulky my tastes.
It wasn’t that the man was fat – far from it. He was just rather tall and built like a brick house. She figured him for ex-military, though what he was doing stuck as a doorman was beyond her.
Krissy raised her eyebrow as she stood on the other side of the desk, waiting until his moronic grin faded and he was paying attention to her words, not just her body. She usually didn’t mind his grins and innuendos, the rare times that they saw each other; today, however, she was in no mood since it had been him who allowed James to enter the building.
She had to remind herself that it wasn’t his fault – he didn’t know about James; taking a deep breath that had him almost drooling again, she spoke: “Mike, did you see a tall man come downstairs? He probably looked a bit… pale.” She decided not to say too much, in case he asked questions. She had too many unanswered questions of her own; there was no way she could answer his.
Mike startled her with a deep chortle. “Yeah, that’s an understatement! He came barreling down the stairs gibbering something about a wolf-man – which is outrageous – and he’d pissed his pants!”
Well, at least I know he won’t ask many questions.
“That would be James. Look, I’d like to ask that you don’t let him in here in the future, should he decide to come back, and if you see him lingering around at all, let me know.” When Mike started to look guilty, she interrupted anything he was about to say. “Don’t worry about it this time. I should have checked that Eddie told you. James is my ex, and I’m not at all interested in seeing him again.”
“Sure thing, Miss Krissy; I will keep my eyes out for him.” He looked like he wanted to salute, which brought a slight smile to her face. She reached over the counter to touch his large hand, chasing away any lingering guilt he might have for his slip up.
“Thank you, Mike. It means a lot that I have such a faithful protector down here. Now, I have to go buy some groceries.” Having said all she needed to say, Krissy turned and walked out, once again not minding that he was watching her hips sway and skirt swish as she left him behind the counter.

Summer Shout Outs - 19 August: ER Pierce

Today’s Shout Out is for my friend and highly talented author ER Pierce. Her latest work is Duality, a great book that deserves great success. But first, a word from  ER about herself.

I write with emotion, occasionally a temper, and I let my words flow free. I dabble in paranormal, contemporary romance, erotic fiction and darker urban fantasy. I fly by the crotch of my panties when writing, though I do try to keep a notebook handy for my many scribbled ideas, plot twists, and characters.
I've been writing for as long as I can remember. I wrote my first story when I was in seventh grade--A first person account of an entire summer. I went through a massive teen angst poetry phase, and I have notebooks and binders filled with prose.

My Newest book published on April 21st 2013, titled 'Duality', featuring Cordelia Kelly and Sol Winterborn. Duality is a paranormal romance, urban fantasy novel that is 50K words about empathic people and elemental powers.

Ceithin and Aurelia from Fractured Moon showed up in my head. They yapped incessantly, demanding I sit and tell their story. After a month or two of being woken up with harsh whispers, I started writing. They haven't stopped, and in fact, brought friends. Now my head is filled with stories, scenes, snippets and crazy people.

Cue Law and Order music here: dun, dun.

These are their stories.

Oh, and hey... I'm a Virgo

Where to find me:

Duality

Blurb:

Duality is a Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy hybrid featuring elemental empaths and a realistic world full of believable characters. Love, betrayal, honor, light and dark, good vs evil.

Extended description

My name is Cordelia Kelly, and I know what you're thinking. In fact, I know what you're feeling, too. I could use your emotions against you, or free you from their constraints. My choice, really, and depends on my mood. You see, I filter both light and dark emotions from humans, but which I chose depends on which side of me is in charge.

I'm not normal. I am the line walker and restorer of balance. A Royal. Think black sheep with red hair - not the blonde bombshell princess. I'm an aberration. Not fully light, nor fully dark. Not accepted by anyone, but wanted by everyone. Mostly for their own amusements or nefarious purposes.

Except for Sol Winterborn. He sees the real me. When fate throws us together to unravel the mystery of my grandmothers death, we have to choose our destiny. Walk together... or continue alone?

The problem is I've been found, and Sol has secrets. My only choice is to fight... or die.

The road is dark, yet I follow the light.

Excerpt:

I unzipped his jeans and lowered both them and his boxers over his hips, exposing his throbbing hard cock. The plump head full and ripe, ready for whatever I had in mind. He arched, sending his cock high in the air and toward my face. Zach was consumed by lust, emotions, and my scent.
“Please,” he whispered.
My hand surrounded his shaft as I pumped up and down, listening to him groan, and fighting the urge to mount and ride him hard, fast, and dirty. The silk of my shirt caressed my nipples, teasing me further. My hips rotated and swayed from side to side, my inner thighs rubbed my pulsing clit, and I moaned as I attempted to assuage the deep ache on my own.
The sweet taste of banana cream flowed down my throat as I inhaled the primal desires of lust.
A sharp crack sounded in the steamy, spinning room, and then a painful sting rent its way through my body. I turned my head, and there was Sol, kneeling behind my naked ass with his hand up and eyebrow raised.
“If you needed something, you could have asked,” he said in a smooth, even tone. I couldn’t tell if he was turned on, irritated, angry, or jealous. Maybe he was none of those things. I mean, who was I to him? And what did it matter who I screwed?
I tried to clear my throat on a hasty rebuttal, but my voice seemed lost, and suddenly, I deflated. A mess of emotions slid over my usually tough skin, and I started trembling. Then I realized I must have let my shields down when I’d fallen asleep, so sure Sol would keep me safe. The hazy spell I was under dissipated, leaving me bereft. The darker side retreated back into the holes of me, and I lay vulnerable and exposed to all the emotional energy around me.

It’s on my must read list, are you tempted?

Summer Shout Outs - 12 August: Alexandra Anthony

Alexandra Anthony
Today’s Shout Out is for talented author Alexandra Anthony and her new book Ascend.  If you love sexy vampires, you won’t want to pass her work by. Here is her bio.

Author Bio:

Alexandra Anthony is an independent author of two romantic, erotic book series: The Vampire Destiny Series and The Dark Hart Chronicles. Both series feature sexy vampires to die for, steamy scenes and many twists and turns in her character's many adventures.  Her books are not for the faint of heart.
She was most recently featured in USA Today in an article by Joyce Lamb titled, "It's time to put some Paranormal Activity into your Reading" and was listed under Self-Published/Indie Authors for her most recent release, 'Ascend (The Vampire Destiny Series Book 4)'.
Ms. Anthony is from the Midwest (Ohio to be precise) and was bitten by the lure of the vampire at an early age.  She chose to take up writing and put her own twist on vampires...making them day-walkers that could easily blend in among their human counterparts.  She also enjoys weaving Old Norse and Greek Mythology into her stories, adding a bit of realism to escapism.

Ascend (The Vampire Destiny Series Book #4)

Blurb:

Waking up as an immortal...Josephine Anderson awakes as true vampire, leaving her half-human life behind. She has little time to adjust to the change however; her evil father has gone missing and wants nothing more than to destroy her and her vampire mate, Stefan Lifsten. But they have other plans ...

Excerpt from Ascend:

Those baby blues never left mine.  Ancient and steely, they seemed to burrow into my very soul.  “I felt nothing.  Not happiness or sadness...not even relief.  I carried on as I had for centuries and he watched me flourish, vackra.  I cared little then.  I had lost everything: my family, my life, even my heritage… I accepted this immortal life over death.  I had no choice.  Yet Amir clung to his humanity, fighting his true nature.  It is a futile struggle.  We are all vampires.  We feed off of another to survive.  Animals are killed to provide food for humans, plants are grown and then harvested for ones survival.  What we are is not much different than humans.  We simply watch the world change and adapt to loss.”
There was a bitterness to Stefan’s tone when he spoke.  My eyes swept over his face, taking in the tense set of his mouth and clenched jaw as I considered his statement.  I’d never thought of comparing human life to that of a vampire.  And now I knew better as to his struggle with loss.
“You lost me when you died.”
His blond eyebrow rose.  “There is that.  It saddens me that I do not fully remember.  I only have flashes of memories…it has been too many years.”
“I saw us together in a memory with my mother.  You begged me to take you before I appeared.  It was while you were missing...after the explosion.”  I whispered.  I leaned closer until our lips barely touched.  “I lost you too.  A thousand years is a long time, Stefan.  I want to remember.  I want to remember it all.”
“You will.”  His impatient hand wove into my hair and pulled my mouth to his.  Our lips met and time stood still.  It was as effortless as when I was still human.  My fingers tugged at his hair, our hips grinding against each other eagerly. My lips parted against the demanding crush of his mouth, his kiss raw and seductive. Our tongues slipped languidly together as we fell into one another, losing ourselves into our kiss.  I savored the taste of him and the feel of his body against my own.  The familiar touch of his flesh against my own ignited the sweet pull of desire, leaving me restless and impatient for more.
Stefan raised his mouth from mine, his lips moist and kiss swollen.  He pulled back and rested his head on his hand, hovering over me.  His fingertips traced along the side of my cheek and down the curve of my jaw as he studied my face carefully.  When his blue eyes finally met my gaze, his hand cupped my chin.  His gentle touch made my breath catch and my bottom lip caught between my teeth.  His thumb tugged at my lower lip, pulling it loose.  “I fear things, Josephine.  I do not know how it is possible to remember something that has been forgotten.  And if I do remember, how do I begin to live with myself knowing I forgot about you…about us?  How does one disregard such an important memory?”  He sighed and his hand dropped to drift down my neck.  “You have given up so much of yourself already...you have given up your life.  I do not want you to lose yourself in this mission to remember.  What will happen if what we discover is too much for you to bear?”
His words stunned me for a moment.  My emotions, already harried, were warring between agreeing with him and pure anger.  Did he think I would walk away from discovering something so important to us both, regardless of the outcome?

Sounds great!

Summer Shout Outs - 9 August: Jake Malden

Today’s Shout out is for Jake Malden a highly talented writer from UK.
Jake Malden is a freelance journalist and writer based in London. He has been experimenting with erotica both on the page and off for some years and has several titles available on Smashwords, the most recent of which is 'Gabrielle and the Devil'.

Blurb:

Gabrielle D'Angelo is troubled-by an apocalyptic dream in which she resists sexual submission to the Devil himself. Her friend Pandora reads it as a need for Gabrielle to abandon her puritan morals, if only for a night. At a decadent Halloween costume-party she encounters a sexy horned seducer. Is his presence a set-up by Pandora? Or is Gabrielle about to be ensnared by someone truly infernal?

Excerpt:

Gabrielle gasped and let out an almost hysterical laugh. Towering above her at some inches over six feet, the breadth of his chest substantially outsizing that of her svelte torso, was a demon. A demon dressed in an immaculately tailored tuxedo, it had to be said, with a scarlet cummerbund wrapped around his tight middle and a matching bowtie. His tar-black hair was slicked away from granite-etched facial features and penetrating blue eyes. And he was red. Deep red from forehead to neck and possibly beyond. Whatever body paint or food dye he had used, it was damned effective. And how the Hell did those curling, eight-inch horns stay attached to his forehead?
Gabrielle put a hand to her startled mouth before, then grasped for words. “Ehhh―haven’t we met before?” She was trying not to giggle as she said it. For a moment she almost believed they had.
“What, you mean before I was cast from celestial bliss into the fiery depths?” he asked nonchalantly. “Or maybe it was a more combative setting.”
Gabrielle blinked, startled. She could almost hear the choral theme from The Omen swelling up around them. Then it occurred to her. Pandora―the tale-telling minx. This is a set-up! Not only had her best friend arranged this encounter in advance, she’d spilled the details of that oh-so-private dream confession to a complete stranger. That’s what she’d been acting so weird about all those weeks. Had this guy been told everything? Gabrielle’s face burned at the thought and at the accompanying sense of betrayal. She made to swing heel and walk, but the costume-demon’s gaze held her. He seemed so calm, so debonair. So completely focused on her. Perhaps she owed him the benefit of the doubt, whoever he was. Pandora she could deal with later.
“Well seeing as we haven’t reached the End of Days, that particular combat’s still to happen,” she answered reservedly. “And don’t make any presumptions about the result.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” he said with no hint of irony. He whisked two glasses of punch off a passing tray and had one in her hand before she’d considered accepting. His impressive size was matched with an agility that surprised her. “Go on, have another.”
Another? So he’d been watching her since her arrival had he? She felt toyed with and manipulated. And undeniably flattered. She was having heart palpitations and there was a churning in her lower belly, but the ability to flee his imposing presence had seemingly abandoned her. So she stood her ground and bantered.
“Sounds like you’re tempting me,” she said, the glass hovering shy of her lips. “I’m not Eve you know.”
“That doesn’t stop me imagining you in her costume.”
Gabrielle mastered the twin urges to laugh and to reach up and slap him. “I’m a Seraphim,” she said with assumed dignity. “And I got to watch while you were kicked out the gates of Heaven, so show some respect.” She met his level stare and drank, to emphasize the point.
“Well maybe that’s why I’m here,” he said genially. “Maybe I’m hoping you can help me find a way back into the Almighty’s good graces.”
“Not going to happen, buster,” she said, adopting a light-hearted air at odds with her inner tremors. “You’re as damned as damned can be, that’s what the Book says. More likely you’d try to drag me down―which isn’t going to happen.”
“No?” The candlelight flickered and blazed in his eyes, startling her. “That’s a very stern theology you’re clinging to. If we’re light and darkness, then shouldn’t I vanish at your very appearance? Yet here we are, having a perfectly pleasant conversation.” He was standing casually even as he loomed over her, one arm crossing his stomach, so that the other elbow rested on it as he sipped his drink. Size apart, there was nothing to intimidate her physically, yet inwardly she quailed. She felt so slight in front of him. “You should try being a little more…Eastern in your thinking,” he was telling her coolly. “We’re not polar opposites, we’re yin and yang. Naturally drawn to each other.” The eyes in his relaxed face burned into her with a soul-searing intensity.

Summer Shout Outs - 7 August: Ray Sostre

Today's Shout Out is for Ray Sostre and a great book, which I have read recently, Her Angela & Protection: Book One. First though a little bit about Ray.

He is New York born, East Coast raised, and West Coast bound
Writing erotica happened by accident in the summer of 2010. That same year, he established a story submission site – AfterDark Online, a place where people are free to publish erotic stories.
He lives in Nevada with his long-time girlfriend, is an avid listener of electronica, and enjoys writing and publishing articles. He jokes: “I’m always looking for writing material.”

Her Angela & Protection: Book One

Blurb:

When Angela Critelli lets Vivienne Perkins move in to her place, she’d never expect the woman of her dreams. Vivienne’s a wonderful cook and home-maker, a perfect companion, and her best friend since high school; the only problem is her sexuality. Angela knew Vivienne was married to an ungrateful husband that never appreciated her, but she also discovered something questionable about her sexuality. Vivienne’s affection may be leading her on, but does she want to be with her?

EXCERPT:

Angela had to admit she was developing feelings for Vivienne. She had only spent one night at her place, and she couldn’t stop thinking about her. Her morning began with thoughts of Vivienne, before she ever got out of bed. Over the course of twenty four hours, she had watched Vivienne transform her life. Vivienne shopped and cooked and cleaned for her. If Vivienne swung that way, she would make a great girlfriend.
Angela remained still on her bed as the sun beamed through the blinds of her bedroom, holding her thoughts close.
What’s wrong with me? My best friend. Vivienne. I want Vivienne. She let that sink in. She’s a good cook, she’s organized, and she’s single. Not to mention I’ve seen her naked, and dear God... what a body! She gives a great foot massage. She turns me on without even trying.
Angela was familiar with the deep ache that gathered in her core. She crossed her legs, which didn’t help. She felt weird at the thought of masturbating over Vivienne. Then again, when her hand grazed over her nipples, and she remembered Viv’s slick hands… she couldn’t help it. Imagining it was her best friend in the whole wide world, her hand brushed over her tummy and then farther down to her center.
Don’t do it, Angie... don’t — Oh fuck, that feels good! I only wish it was Vivi touching me this way, just like that. I could imagine her parting my legs as I feel her — Ah!
Angela was already rubbing herself. Her fingers encircled her nub, giving it a pinch and building her need. She closed her eyes and imagined Vivienne’s hands – soft… firm… slick... She pinched both of her nipples, imagining Viv’s manicured nails. She licked her lips, quietly moaning. Angela thrust her fingers deep inside her folds; she was ready for some satisfaction.
Then, she exchanged hands, placing one hand in her mouth tasting herself, while touching with the other. Mmm... I wish I was tasting Vivienne right now. My hands spreading apart her legs, my mouth tasting her juices... Mmm!
Angela continued to rub herself. Her moans grew, and her breath quickened as she squirmed in pleasure. She kept her eyes closed, while her head rolled back and forth. She reminded herself not to moan too loud, but she couldn’t help it with strong need rising inside her. She rubbed herself furiously as her fingers drew forth her hot juices. Angie clenched her breasts with her other hand, and her moans grew louder until her hips bucked as she climaxed.
Just as Angela’s body writhed into orgasm, there was a knock on the door. Oh fuck! No! Not now Vivienne!
“Angela?” she continued to knock.
Angela couldn’t control her orgasm. She had no choice but to let it out, just as Vivienne entered the bedroom, gasping at her.
“Oh, my gosh!”
Angela jumped in mid-orgasm, “Oh fuck Viv! Not now!” as she lost the moment.
Vivienne quickly slammed the door shut, but it was too late. She’d lost her moment, and Vivienne had seen her masturbating. How could she face Vivienne now? Now she wondered if Vivienne would look at her differently because she walked in on her – masturbating. She could stay in bed all day, since it was a Saturday, but she’d have to face Vivienne one way or another. She wished the floor would open up and swallow her.
“Angela?” Vivienne called from the other side of the door.
“Yes?” She replied, this time her tone was calm, with a touch of insecurity.
“I was thinking of making pancakes. Are you hungry?”

Review by Naomi

Her Angela & Protection Book One

Recently I read Her Angela & Protection Book One by Ray Sostre. I found it to be very much a feel good type of story. Ray has dealt with the subject of two women who having been good friends for a while begin having feelings for each other with great sensitivity. Ray describes Vivienne and Angela beginning their relationship sensually using great care and attention. I’m glad this story is going to continue in future books and look forward to reading them. Kudos Ray.

Summer Shout Outs - 6 August: Sherri Hayes

Today’s Shout Out is for Sherri Hayes, an amazing writer and her latest book, Red Zone. Sherri has kindly allowed us to read an excerpt which I am sure will tempt some into buying.

Blurb:

After a case ended badly for Rebecca Carson, she’s losing her mind sitting around her apartment waiting on her superiors to allow her to return to work. Since she was a teenager, the only thing she’d ever wanted was to join the FBI. Now that dream was in danger.
Gage Daniels has made a pretty good life for himself. A nice house. A career he loves. As a professional football player, he’s used to getting almost everything he’d ever want with just the snap of his fingers. This includes women. A well-timed smile is usually all it takes to attract the opposite sex, especially in Nashville.
When a stalker threatens Gage, the team owner calls an old friend, Rebecca’s ex-partner Travis Hansen, to help protect his star quarterback and find the person responsible. Hansen offers Rebecca the job, and she jumps at the chance. It’s work, and it will get her out of her apartment. How bad can it be?
Posing as Gage’s girlfriend, however, isn’t as easy as it seems. The man is relentless. Rebecca must work to protect Gage while staving off his advances. She’s there to do a job, nothing more. The last thing she wants is to be another notch on a hotshot athlete’s belt.
As the stalker continues to up the ante, Rebecca finds it harder and harder to keep her distance from Nashville’s star quarterback. He isn’t what she expected in one of the city’s most notorious playboys. Now all she has to do is keep him safe until they can find his stalker, and hope she doesn’t lose her heart in the process.

Excerpt:

His weight rested on top of her as he held her face between his hands and stared down at her. “You are so beautiful, Rebecca.”
When his lips met hers again, they were more gentle but no less potent. What had before been a building inferno was now a slow burn. She wasn’t sure which was worse . . . or better. Every lick of his tongue, every nip of his teeth, sent her body screaming for more of him.
She ran her hands along his back, urging him, pleading with him, to go faster, kiss her harder. When that didn’t work, she wrapped her legs around his waist, lifting her hips to brush against him, hoping that once he felt her urgency, her need, he’d do something about it.
He groaned but still refused to pick up the pace.
Finally, she had enough. She needed more. Using her self-defense knowledge, she took hold of his wrists. Exerting an exact amount of force on his pressure points forced him to release his grip on her. The moment she was free, she bucked her hips, and twisted. The result had her freed from his hold and him lying bewildered beside her.
Rebecca immediately climbed on top of him. “What—”
She cut him off with a hard kiss.
“I’ve had enough of slow.”

Looks like a great book doesn’t it. Here are all the links.

Dancing for the Boys info.

Short Blurb:

The idea of dancing privately for a group of young men appeals to college student Andrea Yates. After all, what could happen in a darkened room with a thudding beat and twelve hungry men? When Andrea dons the pink basque she discovers a bravado she never knew she possessed. How far will she go to get her kicks?

Excerpt:

Back and forth I walked swaying my hips, running my hands across my body. I tweaked my nipples between thumb and forefinger thrilling myself in the process. It was hot and dark; the music filled the small room. Gradually the beat took over and l almost forgot l had an audience as l danced with abandonment in my semi naked state. The beat pulsated through the floorboards and up into my body filling me with a bravado l never knew l possessed.
I teased the basque down past my toned stomach and leaned forward turning slowly around as l wiggled it to the floor before stepping out of it, one heeled shoe at a time. I stretched out my long legs in exaggerated high kicks first one way then the other stroking my hand up each, stopping short of my crotch. Turning my body away to grin at the DJ, l shimmied my butt causing a fresh ripple of delighted shouts from the men.
Turning back to face them l ran my hands over my breasts, the nipples of which were very excited and now pointed shamelessly towards the drooling faces. I wanted to make sure they all wanted me as I surrendered myself to Joe’s husky tones. The excitement in the room was tangible reflecting back at me from hungry eyes and heated faces. Their encouragement drove me on, this was my show, it was me they wanted.

Summer Shout Outs - 1 August: Cree Walker

Today sees a shout out for the highly talented Cree Walker. She has written a really gripping book called Maple Lane Manor, Home for Retired Supernaturals. Believe me once you start reading you won’t want to stop. Cree has been kind enough to let you read Chapter one here. Thank you so much Cree. I wish you tons of success with it. I know I will be buying.

Blurb:

Maple Lane returns to the retirement home where she grew up, after ten years away, and must face the music. How can she rebuild the dilapidated building, repay a massive mortgage, and restore her residents’ faith in her with her arch-nemesis – Stacy Three Names – breathing down her neck, hungry for an artifact said to grant immortality? As Stacy sabotages Maple’s efforts, the gorgeous new handyman Derek complicates matters with his demon blood and hot attraction.
How can Maple and her residents fight Stacy, find the artefact, and save their home with the rich and powerful of the town arrayed against them?
…And can she trust a demon to help her?

Chapter One

Maple Lane Manor, Home for Retired Supernaturals

As of about four and a half minutes ago, I officially quit college. I’ve decided that after attending not one but two separate colleges during my nine…okay ten years of switching majors and still not knowing what I want to be when I grow up, that I was never meant to be a serious intellectual. I was not designed to run a corporate enterprise or wow the art world with genius sculpture and paintings. I was studying to become a teacher until I realized I don’t like children. I would have made an excellent veterinarian, except I’m allergic to cats. Or, more accurately they are allergic to me. I wanted to be an engineer, but it turns out I’m also allergic to math, which also eliminated engineering and accounting. I even tried psychology, caseworker, and business major. So after trying everything that ever caught my attention, I switched to a technical college, where I discovered I had no talent for mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, heating, or cooking anything in an oven. And I literally flunked out as a dental assistant when I vomited on a patient while I was cleaning his teeth during final exams. So because of this, or rather despite all of this, I’m going into the family business.
My decision for this very sudden and life-altering change might have been prompted by the three-page, single-spaced letter I am now holding. It’s written in legal speak and since I did a very brief stint in law – after watching a marathon of Law and Order while recovering from a vicious and unprompted cat attack – I will summarize; “Your grandmother is dead, and she’s left you the house and its current occupants.”
This is the letter telling me that my Granny Nan has passed away. It was unexpected, and I’m not saying unexpected as in she was always so healthy and she never said she was sick. No, I’m saying unexpected because she was a vampire. Granny Nan was the first in our family, full born. She came with all the perks of the undead. She could turn into a bat and she never aged. She drank the blood of the living, but she never took more than necessary. She could hypnotize people with a wink of her long black lashes, and any whispered suggestions she made became the victim’s lifelong mission to fulfill. She stayed inside on sunny days and avoided anything resembling a wooden stake. On top of all of this, she was very fast and very smart and very full of life.
She raised me from six months old, as my mother had met her untimely demise in an unfortunate car accident involving a truck transporting picket fence posts. As far as anyone knew in the small town where I grew up, Granny Nan wasn’t my very young-looking, nearly two hundred year-old grandmother. She was just my mom.
I’m a second-generation vampire. Vampires aren’t made, or even bred. As far as we can tell, they just happen once in a while, and the only way they can have children is if they choose to do so with a human. Long story short, that makes me a quarter vampire. Meaning I don’t get to live forever, I can’t turn into any cool animals, and I will never be able to hypnotize people with a look or a whisper. The only thing I got from that side of the family is that I have to wear sunscreen year round and I’m mildly anemic. I don’t drink blood, but I like my steak extra rare. I have a pretty good metabolism, but unlike Granny Nan I do have to burn a few calories on the treadmill a few times a week if I want to eat cupcakes.
Having been raised in a retirement home, I am probably more aware of my own mortality than most. What I learned from my somewhat different childhood experience was that I didn’t want to die without living a full and happy life. The only problem was I seemed to be having trouble getting that life of excitement started. I was so scared to make the wrong move that I ended up not moving at all. So at twenty-seven – okay twenty-eight, I was now the newest caretaker of Maple Lane Manor, Home for Retired Supernaturals.

I stepped off the little twin engine plane, feeling the first flutter of nervousness. Though I loved my Granny Nan dearly, I hadn’t actually been home once since I started my lengthy college experience nearly ten years ago. Part of the reason I’d chosen to attend school nearly two thousand miles away was because I was living in the now, not sitting in a retirement home waiting to die and talking about the good old days. I told myself the night I left that I would not go to one more funeral. I would not attend one more wake and I would not read one more obituary. For those of you who don’t know, these make up some very intoxicating pastimes for the elderly, and though the current crew of the Manor was pretty healthy, I wasn’t going to risk sticking around to find out if I was wrong. Up ’til now I believed they’d had their lives, so it was my turn and, unlike my Granny Nan and a long line of her predecessors, I wasn’t wasting mine on them. A decade of wasted reality had altered that perspective and I found out the hard way where my fate truly lay.
I snorted as I grabbed my pink leopard-print suitcase. It was vintage Louie and a gift from Vie on the night of my high school graduation. It was the only old thing I owned and I only kept it out of respect for Vie and her history of traveling around the world with it. Otherwise, old things had an expiration date just like people, and since I had yet to make my own history I refused to own anything that the factory had more than one of.
Walter was waiting for me in the house car. The car was a vintage nineteen twenty-three Mercedes-Benz. It was a very cool car but not very practical in eastern Massachusetts during the winter months. Fortunately, tonight was a humid eighty-seven degree June evening.
I tried not to react to how shockingly old Walter had grown in the ten years I’d been away. He grumbled something about moving my ass because The Wheel was about to start. The Wheel – better known to the rest of the world as Wheel of Fortune – made that small half hour slot a religious gathering for its residents. I wasn’t sure if it was all the lights and glitter or if it was Vanna White, an eighth vampire by the way, strutting her stuff and pressing buttons, but the residents of Maple Lane didn’t miss it. Ever. Events were scheduled around that sacred half hour, even seeing me off when I’d left the Manor for the last time ten years ago. I remember walking out the door with Granny Nan and waving over my shoulder as they all sat hypnotized by the glowing television screen. Nobody even moved.
“Nice to see you too, Walter,” I said sweetly. Walter’s appearance might have aged, but his unwavering grumpy scowl was steadfast as ever.
He grumbled again and peered out at the road through impressive Coke bottle glasses.
Walter had always been a man of few words, but since I’d left, even those words had become non-existent. Werewolves are nothing if not a loyal bunch, and to Walter I’d abandoned them because I didn’t respect or love them anymore. At least that’s what Granny Nan told me when he refused to talk to me on the phone.
I would have continued to push for conversation, but I was too busy gripping the door handle for the duration of the ride. His vision had been pretty bad ten years ago, and I was pretty sure he was now legally blind. I would have offered to drive, but that would have entailed him pulling to the side of the road and I wasn’t sure if I should risk that proximity to the ditch or the telephone poles.
We screeched to a halt in the Manor’s driveway safe and sound, if you didn’t count my elevated blood pressure, and Walter got out and went inside without so much as a hello. With shaky hands I fumbled the door open and angled out of the low-riding antique automobile. I lugged my bag out of the tiny backseat and looked up at the not-so-splendid wonder of Maple Lane. I blinked up several times at the ramshackle mansion and sighed. Even in the twilight I could see it needed paint and a new roof. The lawn needed serious help, and the overall appearance of the house was that it looked haunted. Ironically, the one thing Maple Lane lacked was a ghost.
The door slammed behind me, and I cringed at the noise. But everyone was seated in the parlor staring slack-jawed and wide-eyed at the colorful screen as the ratcheting sound of the sacred wheel was spun. I couldn’t help but smile at the sight before me. Vie sat in the faded orange, overstuffed wingback chair she’d dubbed “the throne.” Walter had plunked himself down in a beat-up brown La-Z-Boy less than four feet from the screen so he could see, and Willow and Alex shared the couch. Both had their legs crossed in lotus position.
I waited patiently for a commercial before announcing a friendly hello to everyone.
Walter ignored me, Willow nodded, Alex flashed me a peace sign, and Vie sighed and rose to her feet to give me a welcoming hug. She patted my hair and whispered how sorry she was that my Nan had passed so unexpectedly.
Willow and Alex scooted to the ends of the couch so I could sit between them and suddenly I was a little girl again, watching The Wheel with my strange extended family. I enjoyed those few moments of remembered bliss until Jeopardy came on and Alexander clicked off the television.
“So are you going to sell this old heap?” Walter snapped suddenly. This was rude even for Walter.
“Why would I sell this place? It’s our home.”
 “Walter!” Vie said sharply.
“We’ve got a right to know what she’s going to do, don’t we?” Walter countered.
When nobody else spoke and every eye in the house focused on me expectantly, I cleared my throat. “I love this old house.”
“How do you plan to maintain it?” Walter asked. “Your grandmother sank most of her savings into your college experience. I supported her at first, thinking maybe one day you’d wise up and get your head out of the clouds, but you’ve managed to be the only person on Earth to attend college for a decade without getting a single degree in anything. How does one do that, exactly?”
One drops out of classes before completing them, I thought to myself.
 “Walter!” Vie hissed again.
“No, woman. She needs to hear the truth of it. If she’s ever going to grow up she needs to be treated like an adult.”
Vie hissed at him and it sounded like a protective mother cat standing over her kitten.
The elderly werewolf snarled back at her, but broke into a cough and wheezed from the effort.
I sighed as I waited patiently for Walter’s temper and coughing fit to dissipate. “No, he’s right.” I nodded to the group. “I hadn’t realized that Granny had sacrificed so much for my schooling, but it’s time for me to grow up.”
“Too little, too late,” Walter barked. “This place is too far gone for some flighty little girl without a degree – or a job, I might add – to fix it. You’ll never get this old dump up and running again and the longer you wait, the lower its market value will go. Time is no longer on your side, young lady.”
I narrowed my eyes at his challenge. “We’ll see about that, you old dog,” I said, throwing a little of his venom back at him.
He glared his optically enlarged eyes right back at me. “You haven’t finished a thing in your life, little girl. I don’t expect the biggest challenge of it to be the first thing you manage to complete.”
I crossed my arms. “I’ll take your bet.”
There was an audible ugly gasp as everyone in the room sucked in a breath. My grandmother had very few rules in her house, and “no betting” was number one on that list. But Granny Nan wasn’t here.
“If I do get this place up and running again, what do I get in return?” I asked the group.
“How about the satisfaction of knowing you’ve finally accomplished something?” Walter sneered.
“How about that collection of baseball cards you keep under your bed?” I countered with a raised eyebrow.
Then I looked at Vie. “And I want Marilyn’s shoes.”
I looked to the wizard next. “Alex…you’ve got to shave your beard and cut your hair if I do this, and, – ” I turned to Willow, who reeked of peppermint schnapps, “ – I want you to stop drinking before noon. How’s that sound?”
“What do we get in return?” Walter argued.
“How about the satisfaction of knowing you have a place to live and a bed to sleep in at night?” I shot back.
Walter thought on it long and hard. “We need to come up with a time frame to decide if we’re just fighting a losing battle or if you’re here for the long haul.”
 “A year,” I said.
Walter snorted. “The way the housing market is crashing I wouldn’t give you a month before you decide it’s too hard and quit.”
“Six months,” Vie interjected. “We have to give her a fighting chance to actually do something.”
“We’ll vote on it!” Willow announced suddenly in her soft little voice.
In the end I got six months, but I think it was only because half of them hoped to be dead and gone by the time my trial period was up. The deal was I had to improve the house and catch up on the bills.

 Oh, and not quit.
